My Freedom Ends Where Your Bumper Begins

Plastered

Giving public statements has to be somewhat of a human urge throughout mankind’s history.

Back in Ancient Times Greek and (copycat) Romans delivered rhetorical masterpiece speeches. It’s seems like there is something that fuels a drive that makes us express ourselves whether it is by (cave) paintings, plays or, let’s face it, bumper stickers.

Means of expressing your opinion in the 21st century are diverse (blogs, public speeches, discussions and people keep forgetting that the right to active/passive vote) but have one thing in common. Things need to go fast. Pace, pace, pace. So how do you reach a wide audience without a lot of effort? Pull of the sticker and run over it with mild pressure and - you’re done. Driving down the highway, you let people know that drum machines don’t have a soul and it’s time for Bush to leave the office. Easy. Fast. That’s how we like giving a statement, namely without extra effort. No more contemplating on how to begin a rhetorical speech. Seems like the Romans weren’t that smart after all.

Here the history of bumper stickers: Gluing stickers onto car bumpers became quite popular after World War II. During the World War flags and national symbols where attached by wires on the back of the car for identification and pride reason. Soon the wires were replaced by “ressure sensitive adhesive” (Thanks Wiki for that term) and thus turned out to be more practical. Ever since this major moment in human kind history, people didn’t mind plastering their cars with short statements uttering their opinions in only seconds.

Plus, it is entertaining to bump into bumper stickers on the road. I personally don’t have one on my car, but I’d choose the “My Other Car Is A Piece Of Shit Too”. To all the busy bumper sticker people out there: Thank you so much. It’s always been a pleasure provided you’re not an opinionated Republican person.

Blog Bumper Stickers

On the web, there has been a similar trend. Due to my taste in design, I refuse adding these in my theme, but I couldn’t help attaching some to this post that represents my blog bumper. That’s a compromise. I found some really great stickers  on internetbumpersticker.com. All the credit for their bumper stickers goes straight to them. Internet Bumper Sticker® is a registered trademark of InternetBumperStickers.com.

Now you lieber Reader, have you seen a particularly funny bumper sticker or do you have an idea for one that transcends the ingeniousness of a peanut butter?

Finally, a quote of wisdom for people who sense that they sometimes reach a point where they only accept their own opinion. That’s what is known as opinionated…

Rhetorical Speeches delivered in Ancient Times.
