Lingo Bingo #9: Cardio & Kids
I know that I have neglected my German entries a lot lately, but I just don’t feel like posting anything German. It’s not that I am having a writer’s block or I’m missing German word wit. No, it’s not that. So, as an apology, I’m now concentrating on German idioms and proverbs. There you go. I came across with these in the last two weeks. A collection, quasi.
Das Kind mit dem Bade ausschütten.
- Meaning: übereifrig sein, Unnötiges tun.
- Example: Man soll das Kind nicht mit dem Bade ausschütten sondern besser immer seine Ziele im Kopf haben. - You shouldn’t throw the baby out with the bath water instead you better have your agenda in mind
- English Equivalent: to throw the baby out with the bath water.
- Additional: Example by bartleby.com adds a slightly different meaning - Don’t throw out the baby with the bath water. In getting rid of waste, don’t also discard what is worth keeping.
Sein Herz ausschütten
- jemandem sein Herz ausschütten
- Meaning: seine Sorgen jemandem anvertrauen.
- Example: Nach unserer Versöhnung hat er mir sein Herz ausgeschüttet. - After our reconcilation he poured his heart out to me.
- English Equivalent: to bare one’s soul, to to pour one’s heart out to so., to unburden oneself/to unburden one’s heart.
Silver Spoons
- to be born with a silver spoon in one’s mouth
- Meaning: to be born rich or into a rich family
- Example: Don’t act like I am extraordinarily top-notch, I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth. - Benimm dich nicht so als ob ich außernatürlich abgehoben wäre, ich bin nicht mit einem silber Löffel im Mund aufgewachsen.
- German Equivalent: das Kind reicher Eltern sein (That translation is my approach since I don’t think that “das Kind reicher Eltern sein” isn’t really a strong proverb, is it? Aufwachsen = to grow up.
Keine schlechten Eltern
- nicht von schlechten Eltern sein
- Meaning: ziemlich gut, ausserordentlich
- Example: Seine Qualitäten in der Führungsposition sind nicht von schlechten Eltern. - His qualities in the leading position are rather impressive.
- English equivalent: No direct translation - to be impressive. Maybe this gets close: That isn’t hallf bad - Das ist gar nicht so übel. (by leo.dict.org)
Das Kind beim rechten Namen
- das Kind beim (rechten) Namen nennen
- Meaning: das Problem klar darstellen, etwas richtig erkennen und aussprechen, zur Sache kommen
- Example: Mir gefällt es wie er das Kind beim rechten Namen nennt. - I love it how he calls a spade a spade.
- English equivalent: to call a spade a spade
Quasi WG - Sort of/Kind of Flat Share
- Ich wohne mit meinen Geschwistern einer Wohnung. Wir haben quasi eine WG. - I live with my brothers and sisters in an appartment. We sort of have a flat share.
WG: Wohngemeinschaft. Wohnen - live; Gemein - common, shared.
Two important words. Remember them. Quasi and WG!
